Contested Grounds | Notes From the Hunt

BEHIND THE STORY | Hunting is all about connection to something larger to yourself. Experiencing life, death and sustenance. It’s what feeds us and drives us all at the same time. Most of society has been disconnected from this way of life and for many people these experiences are a thing of the past. Some of us still understand it’s importance in the connection it provides - connecting back to our food, connecting back to a way of life that served us for thousands of years and connecting back to the land and the cycles that make us who we are. This series is intended to convey the complexity and necessity of that connection.

HERITAGE | Hunting isn’t just something that connects us to the land and the world around us, it’s something that connects us to each other. For generations the traditions and knowledge of hunting have been passed down and instilled into the next as a means of survival. It was essential to being a living, breathing being in this world.

Despite the fact that 95% of the population steadily relies on grocery stores for their food, a small percentage of us have taken great pride in keeping those traditions alive and well. In most rural cultures hunting is still passed down through families and participated in by fathers, sons, mothers and daughters - it doesn’t really matter who you are, as long as you have an interest there will always be someone to teach you.

We don’t want to see this way of life fade away because this is who we are, this is how we connect back to the earth, care for it and cultivate it. This is how we show pride in where we’re from and take care of our world. It would be a shame to let that passion fade.
